Basement Storage and Game Space Organization in Union, KY
Basement storage and game space organization in Union, KY, start to finish: an unfinished basement in Union, Kentucky, that had become the household’s storage overflow, decluttered so the family could use it again. Here is how that went.
Before: what this Union basement looked like
This active family wanted to reclaim their basement from overflowing storage and make room for what mattered most — spending time together.
The shelving was full, so the overflow had moved to the floor. Board games were stacked in a tower beside a lime-green tote — Sorry, Uno, a Guitar Hero box that had not been opened in years. An orange bucket of odds and ends, framed pictures leaning against the shelves, a drum kit and speakers, two suitcases, an exercise ball. The concrete floor between the shelves and the back wall had disappeared, and the table the family wanted to play games at was buried under what should have been on the shelves.
How to turn a basement storage room into a family game space, step by step
The steps are the same as any basement. The difference here was that the family had a second goal — a place to sit down together — so the zoning had to leave room for people, not just bins.
Pull — Everything came off the floor first, then off the shelves. Games got their own pile, sports gear another, holiday another, and the things nobody could identify went in a fourth.
Purge — Games with missing pieces, outgrown toys and the boxes the family agreed they had not opened since the move all went. A basement stops working when it stores things nobody is coming back for.
Plan — Two zones: storage against the walls, living space in the middle. The shelving stayed where it was, but it now holds only what earns a spot — games at reachable height, seasonal bins up high, luggage nested together at the end of the row.
Place — Games stacked spine-out so titles can be read. Bins lidded and lined along the back wall. The floor from the stairs to the table left completely clear, because a game night does not happen in a room you have to climb through.
After: what changed in this basement
With the clutter under control, the family was able to enjoy their basement again, including gathering around the table for board game nights. The transformation gave them not only organized storage but also a welcoming space to reconnect, laugh, and make new memories together.
The concrete floor is visible from the stairs to the back wall. The shelving on the left holds games and bins in rows, the larger tubs sit in a line along the far wall, and the suitcases and exercise ball have a spot instead of a pile. What had been a room to avoid is now somewhere the family actually goes down to.
Basement storage and game space organization in Union, KY: questions we hear
How long does it take to clear a basement storage room?
A basement storage area is usually one to two sessions, depending on how much has accumulated. The sorting is the slow part; once decisions are made, the placing goes quickly.
What about the things we are keeping but rarely use?
They still get a home, just not a convenient one. Holiday decorations, luggage and keepsakes go into lidded, labeled bins in the least accessible spots, which frees the reachable shelves for the things the family uses every week.
