Before: what this Covington bedroom looked like

This project focused on creating a bedroom that was both fun and functional for a young girl. We organized her bedroom and closet by sorting clothing, toys, books and keepsakes.

The desk under the loft bed had stopped being a desk. Hair clips, craft bits and small toys had spread across it until there was no clear surface, and the floor around it was doing the same job — a doll pram, a scooter, dress-up shoes. Nothing was broken. It had simply run out of places to go.

How to organize a girl's bedroom and closet, step by step

We use the same four steps on every job. With a young child the difference is who makes the decisions and how high the shelves go.

Pull — Everything came off the desk, out of the closet and off the floor. Clothing, toys, books and keepsakes each got their own pile, which is the first time anyone could see how much of each there actually was.

Purge — She sorted with us. Children are more decisive than adults expect when nobody is rushing them, and clothes that no longer fit are an easy yes.

Plan — Hanging rail at her height so she can reach her own clothes. A drawer tower beside the desk for the small things that used to cover it. Keepsakes boxed and labeled, up high, out of daily traffic.

Place — Everything went back where a five-year-old would look for it, not where an adult would file it. That is the part that decides whether it holds.

After: what changed in this bedroom

The result was a bright, organized space where she could play, relax and grow with confidence.

The desk is a desk again. The drawer tower beside it holds what used to cover the surface, each drawer labeled so she can find things and put them back without asking. Best of all, the systems were designed so she can help maintain her own room, which gives her and her family a little more peace of mind.

The closet, before and after

The closet was doing more work than the room. Everything she owned that was not on the floor was in here, on one rail set at adult height.

Kids bedroom organization in Covington, KY: questions we hear

A bedroom and closet together are usually one session. The sorting takes longer than the organizing, and we would rather go at the child’s pace than rush decisions that will not stick.

They will if it is built for their height and their logic. Rails they can reach, labels they can read, and categories that match how they think about their own things rather than how an adult would sort them.
