The Urge to Purge Method is the same four steps on every project, in the same order: Pull, Purge, Plan, Place. It is simple on purpose. A method you can remember is a method you can repeat on your own after we leave, and the order is what keeps a room from drifting back.
Pull
The first thing we do is take everything out of the space. All of it, onto the bed, the counter, the driveway. It feels like the room is getting worse, and for an hour it is. But the steps that follow cannot be done properly with things still hidden in the back of a shelf. Pulling everything out is the only way to see duplicates, forgotten items, and the things that genuinely matter to you. Those last ones are the items that have earned a place in your home.
Purge
Now we decide, together, what stays. Keep, donate, sell, recycle, discard. This is the part people dread, and it is the part we are most careful with. We ask good questions and we never push. Our goal is not to throw everything away; it is to help you keep what adds value to your life and let the rest go without guilt. You have the final say on every single item.
Plan
Before anything goes back, we design a system for how you actually live. Who reaches for what, and when. What has to be easy or it will not happen. Your daily routine, your family, your height, your habits. A pantry for someone who cooks every night looks different from a pantry for someone who grabs breakfast and leaves. The plan is built around the person, not the photograph.
Place
Everything you kept goes back into a home of its own. When every item has a place, it is faster to find and easier to put away, and the room stays organized because putting something away has become obvious instead of a decision. This is where labels, bins and shelving come in, and only now, because we finally know what needs storing.
Why the order of the Urge to Purge Method matters
Most organizing attempts skip Pull and Purge and go straight to Place: buy bins, fill bins. The room looks better for a week and then the bins are full of things nobody wanted. Doing the four steps in order is slower on the day and much faster over the year.
You can see the method in every one of our before and after projects, each of which has a “how we organized it, step by step” section.
