Decluttering does not mean minimalism: it is about deciding what to keep, not about living with nothing. That single idea, which Marie Kondo has spent more than a decade teaching, is the one we most want people to hear before we walk through the door. A decluttered home can be full of color, books, photos and the things you treasure. It just does not have the things you do not.
Decluttering does not mean minimalism: why people fear the bare room
When you imagine clearing out your home, you may picture a minimalist, bare-bones space, and that can be daunting. Minimalism, by definition, advocates living with less. Kondo’s approach is different: live among the items you actually treasure. Seen that way, the whole process feels lighter, and it leaves plenty of room for individual expression.
Three ideas we use on every project
The keep question
Kondo’s version is “does it spark joy?” Ours is a little more practical: does this add value to your life today? Either way, the question is about what stays, not what goes. If the honest answer is no, the item can leave, and the space that is left fills with things you genuinely love.
Categories, not rooms
Trying to do an entire room at once is a recipe for defeat. Work in categories within the room instead. The shelf of books: go through every book, ignore everything else on the shelf, then move to the next category. It keeps you on track and it keeps decisions consistent, because you are seeing all of one thing at once.
Write it down
A list on your phone or a notepad keeps a decluttering project moving between sessions. Checking things off is rewarding, and it is a record of progress on the days it feels like there has not been any.
The one thing we changed
Kondo’s method asks you to do the whole home in one intense stretch. For most families in our part of Northern Kentucky, that is not realistic, and it is not how we work. We do one room per session, finished completely, at a pace you can keep. The ideas above survive the change; the marathon does not have to.
