Before: what this Cincinnati guest bedroom looked like

Our client wanted to transform an underused room into a warm, inviting space for family and friends.

It had good bones — lavender walls, two windows with curtains, a wooden dresser and a nightstand. But the bed was a bare mattress with a fitted sheet, and it had become a desk: a laptop, papers and a bag sat on it. Boxes and a plastic tub stood at the foot of the bed, more bags and boxes were along the wall by the door, and the carpet had become the shelf. It was a bedroom that nobody was going to sleep in.

How to turn a spare room into a guest bedroom, step by step

A spare room only stays a guest room if it is empty of everything else. The steps are the usual four, and the last one is styling.

Pull — Everything that was not bedroom furniture came out into the hallway — the boxes, the bags, the paperwork on the bed.

Purge — Paperwork was sorted and filed elsewhere. Boxes were opened and either dealt with or given a real home in another room; a guest room is not storage.

Plan — One rule for the room: only what a guest needs. Bed, bedside, a dresser with drawer space left empty, and a lamp. The dresser top holds a lamp and a mirror, not the overflow.

Place — The bed was made up properly with a duvet and pillows, the mirror and lamp went on the dresser, the nightstand was cleared, and the floor was left empty so a suitcase has somewhere to open.

After: what changed in this guest bedroom

We organized the room, styled the furniture and décor, found homes for miscellaneous items, and created a clean, comfortable layout that felt both functional and welcoming. The result was a guest bedroom that was ready for visitors at any time — a peaceful retreat where guests could relax and feel right at home.

The bed is made with teal bedding and pillows, the dresser has a lamp and mirror on it and nothing else, and the carpet is clear from the door to the window. The purple walls and curtains that were always there now read as a room someone chose, rather than a room that got left.

Guest bedroom organization in Cincinnati, OH: questions we hear

A spare room like this is usually a single session, including making up the bed and styling. Most of the time goes on finding real homes for what was being stored in it.

Into the rooms it belongs to, or out of the house. We sort it by destination before anything moves, so the spare room does not just shift its clutter down the hall.
